Meet Nina Miranda
Nina’s Story
Nina is an acclaimed singer, songwriter, and musician known worldwide for her distinctive, genre-blending sound and soulful vocal work. She first achieved international renown as the frontwoman for the boundary-pushing band Smoke City, co-writing and performing the iconic global hit “Underwater Love”. She went on to co – create 2 bands releasing critically acclaimed albums with the filmic ‘Shrift’, and the analog ‘Zeep’.
Nina then learnt to record and produce herself and others in her home studio, and releasing her solo album ‘Freedom of movement ‘. (This was the first time any of the musicians had been recorded by a woman). She is currently working on her new album. “Iconic”… “ A trip-Hop Luminary” Gilles Peterson BBCR6.
Throughout her multi-decade career, Nina has captivated audiences on major global stages, performing at world-renowned festivals including Glastonbury and Coachella. She has collaborated with celebrated artists such as Basement Jaxx, Nitin Sawhney, Bebel Gilberto, and Femi Kuti.
Beyond her recording and touring success, Nina is an expressive visual artist, educator, and vocal workshop facilitator who uses music, rhythm, and storytelling to inspire healing, connection, and self-expression.
She is thrilled to stand alongside Kaz and the Bennu team in championing this crucial work.
Why Bennu?
“Bennu is a sanctuary for children and young people to discover who they truly are. Navigating my own neurodiversity (ADHD), as well as rejection sensitivity, while working in creative environments taught me how overwhelming self-doubt and performance pressure can be. If I had known as a young person how vital it is to breathe, set boundaries, and protect your mind from normalised traps like alcohol and drugs, it would have changed everything.
The arts offer a unique space where we can process complex emotions, express our individuality, and reshape our own life stories. Bennu provides that vital wrap-around care, using music, drama, art, dance and real-time human connection to help young people find their voice, step away from screens, and build healthy self-worth.
Attending the Bennu Gala was unforgettable, a banquet of warmth, dignity, and raw creative talent. Kaz and her team create a safe, healthy, non-patronising environment where every child and young person is treated as sovereign, curious, and brave.
