Jo Martin’s Story
Jo Martin is a celebrated British actress whose dynamic career spans iconic television roles, critically acclaimed films, and standout stage performances.
She made television history as the first Black Doctor on Doctor Who, introducing the world to the Fugitive Doctor, a role she continues to portray across the television universe and in Big Finish audio dramas. Audiences also widely recognise Jo as CEO Max McGerry in the BBC’s long-running medical drama Holby City, as well as starring in the hit PBS series The Marlow Murder Club.
Her extensive screen work showcases a remarkable range across drama and comedy, featuring roles in Black Ops, Dreaming Whilst Black, Fleabag, Back to Life, Top Boy, The Sandman, Champion, and Harlan Coben’s Netflix series Missing You. On the big screen, Jo’s feature film highlights include Steve McQueen’s BAFTA-winning Education, Mike Leigh’s Hard Truths, Batman Begins, Blue Story, and Chalet Girl.
Why Bennu?
“Bennu is the organisation I wish had been around when I was young, they offer the type of wrap-around care I know I would have benefited from. As a young creative, I wasn’t equipped to deal with the constant rejection, the on-set pressure when booking a job, or demanding directors and producers who seemed to forget that we aren’t machines. In those early years, my mental health took a real bashing.
Having an organisation like Bennu is essential to help children and young people navigate the many obstacles of carving out a career in the competitive arts. I love that Bennu offers a sanctuary and therapeutic spaces for them to process their experiences, build true self-value, and recognise that their past does not dictate their future.
The work Bennu does is vital to protect and nurture the next generation. I am incredibly proud to be part of this groundbreaking organisation. My thanks to Kaz and her wonderful team for inviting me.”
